9889 Syrians killed since Sharaa took Damascus
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights documented the killing of 9,889 people across Syria between the fall of the former regime on December 8, 2024, and August 6, 2025. This was "due to the ongoing violence and violations by local and foreign parties, in addition to the widespread security chaos."
The Observatory stated in a report that 7,449 civilians were among the victims, including 396 children and 541 women, stressing that this "reflects the fragility of the security situation and the increasing danger posed to the most vulnerable groups in society."
The Observatory stressed that accountability remains absent, "and in some cases, perpetrators are being covered up and facts are being distorted."
In this context, the Observatory noted that, for example, the fact-finding committee formed to investigate the coastal massacres did not provide results consistent with the facts, while other massacres were being committed in areas such as Sweida.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights explained that, concurrently, pro-government groups launched organized media campaigns aimed at undermining any entity documenting or exposing violations by disseminating sectarian and inflammatory rhetoric that tendentiously links sects to specific political positions.
He cited, for example, the accusation that the Alawites are “remnants of the regime,” the Druze are “collaborators,” and the Kurds are “separatists,” noting that this “deepens divisions and obstructs the process of transitional justice.”
Meanwhile, the Observatory revealed that thousands of detainees remain in prison without a proper trial or appearance before the judiciary. These include some who were arrested after the fall of the former regime, and others who were arrested during raids or at security checkpoints. Many of these detainees have no clear charges against them and are being arbitrarily detained without due process.
