A protest demonstration took place in the capital, Damascus, condemning the agreement with Israel

Hundreds of protesters took to the streets of Damascus to hold mass protests against the political and security agreement signed between the Syrian Interim Government and Israel, under slogans opposing normalization. The protesters raised Syrian flags and banners condemning normalization, chanted slogans against the agreement such as “We toppled the Assad regime, and now it’s Israel’s turn,” and “They said Hamas is terrorist, but all Syria is Hamas-supporting,” alongside banners supporting the Hamas movement.
These protests came in response to the announcement of the agreement, which was mediated by international parties, causing a significant split in Syrian public opinion. While some believe that this agreement could contribute to relative stability and end decades of conflict, a large segment of Syrians reject it, viewing it as a “compromise on national principles” and “a betrayal of the victims’ blood.” The signing of the agreement coincides with ongoing Israeli aggression on Gaza, which has intensified public anger and sparked widespread solidarity with the Palestinians, especially with Hamas, which enjoys substantial support among Syrians, despite being classified as a “terrorist organization” by some forces.
Additionally, continued Israeli assaults and violations on Syrian territory have increased tensions, raising the possibility of an outbreak of popular anger that could escalate into larger confrontations in the near future.
