Philippine officials announced today, Wednesday, that the powerful earthquake that struck central parts of the country has resulted in at least 69 deaths, with over 140 others injured. The quake caused building collapses, power outages, and prompted residents to flee into the streets.

The Philippine National Disaster Management Agency reported that the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.9 on the Richter scale and struck Cebu Province and neighboring regions late Tuesday evening, leading to extensive damage.

Benardo Rafaelito Alejandro, deputy director of the Civil Defense Office, indicated that most of the fatalities resulted from falling debris. He emphasized that current operations are focused on search and rescue efforts, especially in the city of Bogo, the epicenter of the quake.

He added that the area continues to experience numerous aftershocks, and many residents refuse to return to their homes, particularly in Bogo.

The regional disaster management office confirmed that among the victims, 30 deaths occurred in Bogo due to landslides caused by the earthquake, which buried homes and residents. Additionally, 22 people died in the town of San Remigio.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has recorded over 600 aftershocks, with the strongest reaching 4.8 on the Richter scale.
