Confiscation of Airport Employees’ Phones Raises Fears of Arbitrary Arrests

Amid an atmosphere of tension and apprehension, a reliable source from inside a Syrian airport reported that security forces have begun confiscating the phones of several employees, particularly those from the Druze and Alawite communities, under the pretext that the devices may contain content deemed "offensive to the state."
According to the source, the confiscation process is being carried out systematically. The phones undergo a thorough inspection to detect any material that might document violations inside the airport or depict behavior the authorities could consider inappropriate or embarrassing. Based on the findings, a decision is made either to release the employee or detain them.
This measure has sparked widespread concern among staff members, especially young employees from both sects, who now feel they are under tight security surveillance that could lead to detention simply for having certain videos or images stored on their phones.
In response to these developments, a number of activists have issued urgent calls to widely share this information, warning that what is happening constitutes a direct threat to the safety and security of airport workers. They emphasized the need to break the silence and shed light on what they described as “intimidation tactics” targeting even public sector employees.
