Iran Confirms Continued Agreements with Syria Despite Assad's Fall

Iranian Foreign Ministry stated embassy work resumption in Damascus will be delayed due to damage during military operations overthrowing former Syrian regime president's rule.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baqai explained "reopening our country's embassy in Syria requires necessary arrangements on our agenda and will be implemented when required conditions are met."

Baqai emphasized in regular media meeting that "our presence in Syria wasn't motivated by expansion, hegemony seeking, or reviving past empires, but our main goal was helping secure Syrian people against violent extremism and terrorism."

Added "our presence was purely advisory, never supporting or defending specific person, group, or party in Syria, and until last moment, our concern was contributing to maintaining Syria's security and territorial unity."

Iranian spokesman denied circulated Syrian debt figures accuracy, confirming "figures like $50 billion as Syrian debt to Iran being circulated are highly exaggerated."

Baqai confirmed countries' signed agreements continuity, explaining "agreements, treaties, and memoranda of understanding signed between countries weren't between temporary groups or governments, but between states, therefore, all these obligations and duties exist and don't disappear, and any regime or government assuming power in any state is bound by 'state succession' principle, internationally recognized legal principle, to transfer these rights and duties."
