Reactivation of Checkpoints… Security Deployments in Tartous and the Coast
Today, the city of Tartous witnessed the reactivation of the Dweir Sheikh Saad intersection checkpoint after it was previously removed, in addition to the reinforcement of other checkpoints at the city’s entrances and exits, where security forces are conducting thorough searches of pedestrians and vehicles. Sources from the observatory confirmed that this step comes as part of heightened fears of potential armed attacks in the Syrian coast, amid dense security deployments across many coastal areas and villages.
The nature of whether these checkpoints will remain temporarily or permanently has not yet been clarified. These measures coincide with the visit of Syrian President Ahmad Al-Shar’a to the United States, raising questions about the background of these exceptional measures amid the current circumstances.
Earlier in the evening, there was a notable security deployment in the city, coinciding with a convoy affiliated with the Public Security Forces entering the city center. Local sources reported that some members of the convoy shouted sectarian slogans, including: “Patience, Alawites, we came with slaughter,” which contributed to raising tensions and anxiety among the residents.
These developments come amid a state of tension prevailing in the governorate, especially after several barracks and military points were targeted with gunfire by unidentified armed individuals over the past days. Multiple attack incidents have been recorded, although official authorities have not yet claimed responsibility, reflecting increased escalation and residents’ concerns over the rising violence.
