The Ongoing Suffering of Syrians: Forced Displacement and Long Waiting Periods Amid the Absence of a Reconstruction Plan
المخيمات (المرصد السوري)

Months have passed since the fall of the previous regime in Syria, yet thousands of Syrians still live in a state of forced displacement and prolonged waiting. Their lives remain suspended between camps and shelter centers, after losing their homes and towns due to years of ongoing war.

These displaced persons live under harsh conditions characterized by a lack of basic services, overcrowding, and a severe shortage of food and medical supplies. In the absence of any clear plan for reconstruction or restoring stability, they face a real dilemma: returning to their destroyed cities appears unattainable due to widespread destruction of homes and infrastructure, while remaining in the camps is the only option despite increasing difficulties and growing frustration after years of waiting and deprivation.

In Raqqa Governorate, the reality of displaced people and humanitarian conditions clearly reflect this suffering. Official camps host around 50 camps populated by IDPs from Deir Ezzor, Idlib, rural Hama, rural Homs, and rural Aleppo. Additionally, schools and shelter centers host displaced persons from areas like Sheikh Maqsood, Afrin, and Shabak, where around 1,500 families are spread across 35 centers. In Tabqa city in Raqqa countryside, approximately 2,500 families reside in 41 centers, including the municipal stadium, with no real support for rebuilding and providing decent lives for the homeless.

These internally displaced and displaced persons demand their legitimate right to return to their cities and rebuild them, considering that the continuation of the situation in camps only worsens their suffering and delays their opportunity to restore normal life, psychological stability, and living conditions. They emphasize the urgent need for a clear and effective plan to end their suffering and restore life to the destroyed areas.
