To Promote Civil Peace: Calls for the Dismissal of the Syrian Minister of Interior

There is a rising wave of calls within popular and political circles in Syria for the resignation of Mr. Minister of Interior, Eng. Anas Khattab, amid deteriorating security conditions and increasing violence, tension, and instability across various regions.
The Popular Council listed several points highlighting the minister's direct responsibility for the worsening situation. It emphasized that the failure to take effective measures to maintain civil peace, combat hate speech, and pursue inciters of sectarian strife has contributed to the escalation of recent unfortunate incidents in the country.
The statement pointed out that the Minister of Interior bears responsibility for the presence of unregulated elements within the General Security apparatus, who committed serious violations and failed in their duty to protect the community. Several attacks on citizens and public places in Damascus and Homs have been documented, reflecting weak management of the security services and a lack of oversight.
The statement also criticized the mishandling of the offensive video insulting the Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which led to unfortunate incidents in Sahnaya and Jaramana. There was an urgent need for swift, professional action to manage the crisis, but this was not executed, resulting in increased religious and social tensions. The demands also called for transparency in investigations, identifying the source of the recording, and holding those responsible accountable according to the law.
In addition, the failure of the minister to deal with the release of major criminals affiliated with remnants of the former regime was also condemned. Many of these individuals were released without clear legal justification, escalating instability and threatening the unity of society and public security.
Therefore, the advocates for change emphasize that the solution lies in appointing a highly competent national security figure capable of managing the security file with wisdom and responsibility, restructuring the General Security apparatus to be more honest and effective, and serving the interests of the homeland and citizens. This would help prevent the recurrence of such crises in the future.
