UK Lifts Sanctions on 24 Syrian Entities, Including the Central Bank

The British government has decided to lift sanctions on 24 Syrian entities, including several banks, among them the Central Bank, as well as various oil companies. This announcement was made in a document published on the British Treasury’s website.
The entities that have had sanctions lifted include oil companies such as “Al-Furat,” “Deir ez-Zor,” and the “General Oil Company,” in addition to “Syrian Arab Airlines” and eight banks, including the Industrial Bank and the Syrian Commercial Bank.
In a related context, the European Union approved the suspension of several sanctions related to Syria, including those concerning energy and transport, during a broad meeting in Brussels last month. It also eased restrictions placed on the Central Bank of Syria by extending exemptions to facilitate humanitarian aid provision.
However, European countries have maintained sanctions related to the authorities of former President Bashar al-Assad, such as those concerning weapons and dual-use technologies, while emphasizing their monitoring of the situation in Syria to ensure that the suspension remains appropriate.
