A U.S. Message to Tehran: The Strike Is Over and There Is No Intent to Change the Regime

In a significant development in the ongoing military escalation between Washington and Tehran, diplomatic sources have revealed that the United States has informed Iran that it does not intend to change the government in the country. CBS reported that the U.S. government directly communicated with Tehran on Sunday, confirming that the military strike carried out against Iranian targets was limited and that there are no plans for additional strikes. It also indicated that Washington is not seeking to change the Iranian regime, aiming to contain escalation and avoid sliding into a full-scale war in the region.
Meanwhile, The Wall Street Journal stated that U.S. Special Envoy Steve Weitkoff was authorized to communicate with the Iranians, as President Donald Trump sought to preserve a diplomatic opportunity to reduce tensions and help calm the region. An American official told the newspaper that the Trump administration clarified that the attacks were a standalone operation and not a prelude to a broad war or regime change in Iran.
This communication followed a series of U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities early Sunday, amidst escalating tensions due to reciprocal attacks between Israel and Iran. American sources confirmed that the goal of the strikes was to "deter future attacks," not to pave the way for a full confrontation or regime overthrow in Tehran.
Similarly, last week saw a major escalation, with Israel launching "the largest strike" inside Iranian territory since the onset of the conflict, targeting military sites and nuclear research centers, resulting in the deaths of several Iranian military leaders. Reports also revealed that the Trump administration had previously rejected an Israeli plan to assassinate Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, reflecting the serious nature of the scenarios being discussed in U.S. and Israeli decision-making circles.
Despite regional and international pressures, the White House reaffirmed that the United States "does not seek a full-scale war," but is prepared to defend its forces and interests in the Middle East if necessary.
