Accusations of Lack of Transparency Haunt "Deir Al-Az" Campaign: What is the Truth About the Donations?

The "Deir Al-Az" campaign has sparked widespread controversy due to allegations related to lack of transparency and managing donation funds, raising concerns about a possible repetition of the issue in other campaigns across the governorates, especially given the absence of clear information about the methods of collecting donations and how they are allocated to support infrastructure in targeted cities.
The matter began with a statement from the campaign's official spokesperson, Hussein Al-Abdullah, who mentioned that the total donations amounted to approximately $31 million, including cash and pledges. He clarified that the amounts received so far reach about $3.423 million, which are under the custody of the campaign organizers, along with various pledges, including a trusted donation from the Ministry of Finance worth $10 million, which is currently being collected.
He also indicated that some entities and individuals have donated projects, such as the SUMZ organization, which provided $2.2 million for medical projects. He confirmed that meetings are being held to develop a clear action plan. Additionally, the company "Rar Etty" provided technical support worth $1 million for the education sector.
In a different context, Al-Abdullah pointed to a donation from Abdul Aziz Al-Abd in Germany amounting to $2.05 million, which has not yet been received, as they are in contact with him to find out how the amount will be transferred. He added that some pledges included time frames ranging from one year to three months for delivery, but the received amounts are not sufficient to rebuild the entire governorate, which needs about $200 million, and will instead be directed toward current priorities.
In response to these statements, "Al-Abdullah Al-Abd" appeared in a video clip, sharply criticizing the committee and its officials, affirming that he has not received any money from any party, and that donations were transferred directly to the campaign accounts. He clarified that the fundraising events in Germany, organized by him for the campaign, secured donations worth $2.05 million, and emphasized that no one contacted him before or after those events regarding the matter.
Al-Abdullah's statements sparked a wave of controversy on social media, especially after he confirmed the receipt and documentation of donations through receipts, and called for their public dissemination to ensure transparency. The residents of Deir Ezzor and campaign members emphasized the need to publish all receipts received from donors to guarantee the funds reach the targeted entities and to genuinely support the residents of the governorate.
Amidst this, several donation campaigns have been launched for various Syrian cities, such as "Ashri Horan," "Deir Al-Az," "Al-Wafa for Idlib," and "Reefna BiStahl." The organizers announced that they have received large amounts, divided between direct transfers and pledges to be paid later. However, the lack of transparency in some campaigns raises concerns and underscores the importance of organizers publishing full details of the donation amounts, specifying where the funds are held and how they are spent to build trust and ensure the funds reach their intended destination.
