Ahmed Al-Sharaa, the First Syrian President to Attend UN Meetings in 60 Years
رئيس الإدارة السورية المؤقتة أحمد الشرع

The head of the Syrian Interim Government, Ahmed Al-Sharaa, has arrived in New York, in a historic step marking his first attendance at the United Nations General Assembly meetings in nearly 60 years, specifically since 1967, according to the official Syrian News Agency (SANA). This comes as part of his preparation to participate in the 80th session of the General Assembly, which will be opened on Tuesday, September 23, and continue until September 27, with its conclusion on Monday, September 29, 2025.

Al-Sharaa is accompanied by a high-level delegation that includes several ministers and senior Syrian officials. This event is considered a significant diplomatic milestone, as it signifies Damascus’s return to the UN platform at the level of heads of state—something that has not happened in more than six decades.

Al-Sharaa, also known for leading the "Jabhat al-Nusra" organization, previously led the armed group that played a major role in the attack that resulted in the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad's regime in December 2024. However, he has since reintroduced himself as a pragmatic leader seeking to rebuild his war-torn country, achieve political stability, and repair Syria’s fractured international relations.

In related developments, the United States expressed its readiness to cooperate with the new Syrian leadership, stressing that it will base its stance on Al-Sharaa’s actions and future decisions.

Later on Monday, SANA reported that Ahmed Al-Sharaa met with a delegation from the Syrian community in the United States, where he emphasized the importance of their role in conveying the true image of Syria, expressing his gratitude for their sincere efforts in serving the homeland.
