Death of Russian Navy Deputy Commander Mikhail Gudkov in an Attack in the Kursk Region

In a new development, Oleg Kozhemyako, the governor of the Far Eastern Russia region, announced today, Thursday, that Major General Mikhail Gudkov, the Russian Navy deputy commander who also led a brigade within the fighting forces against Ukraine, was killed in the Russian region of Kursk.
Unofficial Russian and Ukrainian channels on Telegram reported that Gudkov was killed along with ten other soldiers in a Ukrainian attack that targeted a command center in the town of Koryukovo, located in the Kursk region bordering Ukraine.
Gudkov is considered one of the most prominent Russian officers who have been assassinated by Ukraine since Moscow launched its full-scale war against Kyiv in 2022. He received several medals in recognition of his bravery and military efforts against Ukrainian forces, whom Russia accuses of war crimes.
A statement published on the Kremlin’s website stated that President Vladimir Putin appointed him as the deputy commander of the navy in March. Gudkov was leading a naval brigade affiliated with the Russian Pacific Fleet, which was participating in military operations in the Kursk area. During August 2024, Ukrainian forces managed to seize parts of the region during a surprise attack, before Russia later announced its withdrawal from those areas.
