Iran abolishes morality police patrols regarding hijab
المرأة الإيرانية

Iran has announced the complete cancellation of morality police patrols as part of amendments to what is known as the "hijab law" in the country.

According to the French news agency AFP, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf confirmed the amendment of the "modesty and hijab" law, explaining that the revised law stipulates the complete abolition of "guidance" patrols, which refers to the morality police.

According to local media, Qalibaf mentioned in a message on Tuesday evening that these amendments aim to change the methods of addressing the hijab issue and to achieve a general consensus regarding it.

In recent years, Iran has witnessed numerous proposals to amend the implementation of the "hijab law," which remains a highly contentious issue in the country. Despite the legal amendment, Iranian authorities continue to emphasize the necessity of adhering to the hijab.

It is noteworthy that the issue of mandatory hijab and the methods of enforcing it was at the center of the protests that erupted in Iran following the death of young Mahsa Amini while in custody of the morality police in Tehran in 2022, an event that sparked widespread reactions both domestically and internationally.
