Israeli Aircraft Fly Over As-Suwayda

On Tuesday evening, Israeli military aircraft flew over As-Suwayda province in southern Syria, though the purpose of the flight remains unclear — whether it was a threat of a possible strike or merely aerial surveillance — according to state-run Al-Ikhbariya TV on its X account. The channel provided no further details regarding the targets or whether the flight was linked to any military attacks, as was the case last May.
This development came after Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shibani reiterated, in posts on X, his government’s commitment to protecting all communities in As-Suwayda province and rejecting any attempts to marginalize or exclude the Druze population under any pretext. Al-Shibani’s remarks followed a tripartite meeting in Amman with his Jordanian counterpart, Ayman Al-Safadi, and Washington’s envoy to Damascus, Ambassador Thomas Barak.
Since July 19, As-Suwayda province has observed a ceasefire following a week of armed clashes between local groups and Bedouin tribes that left hundreds dead. In an effort to contain the crisis, the Syrian government has announced four ceasefire agreements in the region, the latest of which has remained in effect since that date. Additionally, the Ministry of Justice announced the formation of an investigative committee into the incidents, which involved “assaults and violations,” with a report expected within three months of its formation.
The Syrian administration continues its intensive efforts to maintain security and stability in the country as part of its strategy to restore order, following the ouster of Bashar Al-Assad on December 8, 2024, after a 24-year rule (2000–2024).
