Lebanese Foreign Minister: Demarcation of Borders with Syria is Complex
لبنان وسوريا

On Tuesday, July 1, Lebanese Foreign Minister Youssef Raji stated that the process of demarcating the borders between Lebanon and Syria is complex and requires time. He emphasized the need to establish a joint technical committee between the two countries to address the issue. In an interview with Sky News Arabia, he explained that the French documents and maps, dating back over a hundred years, which France handed over to Syria and Lebanon in May, are classified documents that contain a French delineation of the borders between the two countries. He added that studying these maps necessitates specialized technical expertise.

Raji pointed out that the delivery of these documents by France holds two main significances: first, a technical aspect to assist Lebanon and Syria in fixing and delineating their borders; second, a political aspect, as Syria shows readiness to cooperate with Lebanon on this matter. He affirmed that border demarcation is a priority for Lebanese authorities, alongside issues such as the return of Syrian refugees and Lebanese missing persons in Syria.

He also emphasized that the new administration in Damascus publicly recognizes Lebanon's sovereignty and independence during bilateral meetings, and is ready to work with Beirut on border delimitation. He expressed his belief that delineating the borders would also help reduce smuggling operations.

In another context, Raji clarified that lifting sanctions on Syria would benefit Damascus's economic situation and accelerate the reconstruction process, which would positively reflect on Lebanon as well. He pointed out that the relationship between Lebanon and Syria has not been healthy for decades, noting that the previous regime in Damascus viewed Lebanon as a subordinate state, with statements and hints suggesting that Lebanon is part of Syria and should be reunified.

Regarding political developments, Lebanon is awaiting a visit from a Syrian delegation led by Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Shibani to discuss important issues, including the refugee file and border control. Lebanese Deputy Prime Minister Tarek Metri conveyed that this visit could mark a turning point in coordinating unresolved issues, especially the return of refugees, border demarcation, and the file of detainees and missing persons. The meeting is expected to also focus on bilateral relations based on equality and mutual respect, as reported by the Lebanese newspaper "Al-Medina" on June 15.
