Patriarch John Yazigi: "You bring twenty children, and we bring one or two."

Recently, there were statements by Patriarch John Yazigi, Patriarch of Antioch and All the East for the Syriac Orthodox, in which he addressed the situation of the Muslim community in Syria. He considered that their efforts and contributions do not match what the Christian community offers, which sparked widespread controversy in Syrian circles.
These remarks came within the context of Yazigi’s comments following a visit by a Syrian government official after the explosion at St. Elias Church in the Dweila area of Damascus, which resulted in about 25 deaths and 63 injuries, according to the Ministries of Interior and Health.
He said: "You bring twenty, and we bring one or two." However, this statement caused a broad controversy, with many Syrians viewing it as an irresponsible expression meant to insult the Muslim community, especially at a time when Syria is experiencing a deep crisis that calls for unity and understanding among all its components.
Reactions led to significant resentment expressed by activists and social media users, many of whom considered that such statements lack national sensitivity and increase sectarian tensions—especially in a country where communities have coexisted for decades with respect and tolerance.
While no official clarification from the Patriarchate has been issued regarding the statement, there is an evident need to promote dialogue and understanding, and to work on unifying ranks, particularly in a stage that requires everyone to dedicate their efforts to rebuilding and stabilizing Syria.
It is worth noting that the Syrian Ministry of Interior announced on Tuesday evening that all members of the terrorist organization ISIS cell responsible for the explosion at Mar Elias Church in Damascus have been apprehended.
