Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, commenting on developments in Syria, expressed his country's hope for the establishment of a national unity government, stressing that the situation remains dangerous.
In an interview with American bloggers, Lavrov drew parallels between the Syrian situation and the events in Ukraine in 2014, stating: "Kiev experienced a government coup following an agreement guaranteed by Germany, France, and Poland, which called for general elections within five months and the formation of a national unity government. However, the coup resulted in the formation of what was called the 'winning government,' which differs from national unity."
Lavrov pointed out that Syria's situation requires international efforts to achieve stability, especially after violent clashes broke out on March 6 between the security forces of the Syrian interim government and opposition militant groups in the Latakia and Tartus provinces.
Meanwhile, Russia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzya, confirmed following closed-door consultations of the Security Council that members of the council are united in rejecting the use of violence in Syria.
Nebenzya also called for the launch of an inclusive political process involving all ethnic and religious components, based on UN Security Council Resolution 2254, to ensure Syria's unity and sovereignty.
It is worth noting that many countries and international organizations support these calls, considering that a political solution is the only way to resolve the Syrian crisis.
