Secret Turkish-Israeli Communications to Prevent Clashes in Syria
The Hebrew-language Channel 2 reported on Sunday, citing a source in Israel’s defense establishment, that Israel does not seek to turn Turkey into an adversary. The source confirmed that secret communication channels exist between the two sides to exchange messages and avoid friction, amid escalating tensions following Israeli attacks on sites in Syria.
The source explained that Israel resorts to military action when political messages fail to achieve their objectives, noting that Tel Aviv has set red lines regarding the Turkish presence in Syria—particularly the deployment of air-defense systems, drones, and missiles that could restrict the Israeli Air Force’s freedom of operation.
The Israeli military previously launched an attack targeting buildings and aircraft runways at Al-Dhuhur Airport in northern Syria, before the Turkish equipment reached its destination, according to the same sources.
According to the Israeli source, the message directed to the Syrian government is clear: Israel does not oppose strengthening the capabilities of the Syrian army, but it will not allow a new threat to emerge near its borders.
Turkey, for its part, denied the presence of any military delegation affiliated with it at the targeted base, stressing in an official statement that there had been no Turkish presence there either before or during the Israeli attacks.
However, Israeli security officials informed the United States that Ankara had been preparing to deploy a radar system at the airport, which would later be linked to air-defense systems operated by Turkish soldiers.
Israeli sources believe that, if implemented, this move could alter the regional balance of power. Although no precise date has been set for the arrival of the Turkish systems, Israel considers Al-Dhuhur Airport—located approximately 70 kilometers from the Turkish border—a potential site for such a deployment.
