Syrian Investigation Committee Focuses on Justice and Achieving Civil Peace After Violence
On Tuesday, the committee appointed by the Syrian presidency to investigate the violent incidents that recently occurred in the west of the country announced its intention to establish justice and "prevent revenge" outside the legal framework. This comes after the death of more than one thousand civilians, the overwhelming majority of whom belong to the Alawite community, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
In a press conference, the Syrian fact-finding committee affirmed its commitment "to bringing those involved in violations in the Syrian coast to justice." The committee also stated that it aims to complete its investigations within 30 days, but its spokesperson, Dr. Yasser Al-Farhan, noted that the duration of work may extend "beyond 30 days in some cases."
The formation of the independent national committee to investigate the events on the Syrian coast was a presidential decision made by Syrian President Ahmad Al-Shara, following the deterioration of the security situation in the region due to an attack carried out by remnants of the ousted president Bashar Al-Assad's regime.
The Syrian presidency clarified via its official account on the "X" platform that the committee, composed of seven members, is tasked with tracking the causes, circumstances, and events that led to these incidents, investigating the violations faced by civilians, and identifying those responsible.
Additionally, the committee will investigate the attacks on public institutions and security and military personnel, and it will submit its report to the presidency within 30 days from the date of the decision.
The Syrian presidency also announced on Monday the formation of a high committee to maintain civil peace, affirming that it will work to communicate with Syrians in the coastal region of the west.
