A number of flights in Egypt were affected as a result of a cyber attack on European airports
The Egyptian Civil Aviation Ministry announced on Saturday evening that the cyber attack targeting several European airports caused partial disruption to incoming flights at some Egyptian airports, including Cairo, Hurghada, and Sharm El-Sheikh. According to the official statement, delays involved flights from Heathrow Airport in London, Letn in Ireland, Brussels in Belgium, and Berlin in Germany, as well as some flights operated by foreign airlines to Egyptian airports.
The ministry clarified that flights operated by Egyptian airlines have not been affected so far, and the situation is being closely monitored by the central operations room in cooperation with relevant international authorities. It also indicated that the attack caused temporary disruptions in the information technology systems of the affected airports, leading to limited delays in takeoff operations.
As part of preparedness and precautionary measures, Civil Aviation Minister Samih Helmy directed increased readiness and enhanced security measures at all Egyptian airports, emphasizing the need to adhere to the highest safety and security standards to ensure that air transport remains unaffected.
These attacks are part of a series of cyber operations targeting American company Collins Aerospace, which supplies verification and takeoff systems at many airports worldwide. The attacks led to the shutdown of some of its systems and the use of manual verification procedures, causing delays and cancellations at some of the most affected European airports, including Heathrow, Brussels, and Berlin, resulting in thousands of passengers experiencing cancellations and delays.
